Tyne Cot Cemetery

The First World War

Tyne Cot Cemetery is a British military cemetery for soldiers who fell in World War I, located in the Belgian village of Passchendaele. The cemetery is situated 2.1 km southwest of the village center and 1.7 km north of Zonnebeke. It contains more burials than any other British military cemetery on the European mainland. The site has an area of 34,941 square meters and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The cemetery was designed by Herbert Baker in collaboration with John Truelove. It is surrounded by a wall of black flint stones capped with white natural stone. The entrance building is also constructed from black flint. At the rear is the semicircular Tyne Cot Memorial, which bears the names of 33,783 missing British soldiers and, in a separate apse, another 1,176 missing New Zealanders.
